Big Bluestem, as its name states, is big! It can grow up to 7’ tall making it a great accent or backbone plant in your garden. It is a larval host plant to many insects (seen below) and is a staple in the prairie meadow ecosystem. Big Bluestem provides cover, nesting sites and food for over 24 species of birds including Sparrows, Wren’s and Meadowlark’s.

Big Bluestem can be aggressive and should planted with caution in small spaces.

Larval Host(s): Northern Pear-Eye Butterfly, Common Wood Nymph Butterfly, Indian Skippers such as the Cobweb Skipper, Delaware Skipper, Dusted Skipper, and the Leonard’s skipper
