Bloodroot is a stunning spring ephemeral flower that emerges before the trees leaf out. As one if the first to emerge in spring it is a vital nectar source for many bees and flies. Plant Bloodroot in shady woodland site rich in moist humusy soil and it will thrive. Ants are crucial for natural seed dispersal - attracted to the sweet coating around the seed they are drawn to the plant collect the seeds.
Red juice from the underground stem of Bloodroot was used by Native Americans as a dye, as well as for insect repellent.
