Sundial Lupin, also commonly called Wild Lupin, has beautiful blue-purple flowers that bloom along a upright elongate stem, to rise above their foliage. Lupin’s palm shaped leaves are an attraction all on their own.
Sundial Lupin is a member of the pea family making it a nitrogen fixing species. It does not transplant well due to large taproot, so take care to choose a place you’ll be happy to have it live (and where it’ll be happy to live).
Sundial Lupin is the only host plant for the extrapolated Blue Karner and Frosted Elfin Butterflies. It can cross pollinate easily with other varieties of Lupin, so best planted on its own so the genetics of the straight species remains intact and will hopefully help bring these lovely butterflies back to Ontario.
Larval Host(s): Blue Karner Butterfly, Frosted Elfin butterfly, Eastern Persius Duskywing
Companion Plants: Butterfly Milkweed, Lance-leaf Coreopsis, Spotted Bee Balm, Purple Cone Flower, Black Eyed Susan, Little Bluestem
